Wrock Recommendations?

Hi there. School for me starts tomorrow, and so I’ve been scrambling to finish my summer homework.

This entails reading a horribly boring book (Founding Brothers by Joseph J. Ellis), looking through notes on Science, and reading and taking notes on a textbook which glorifies Native American and West African culture despite the facts that Native Americans threatened their children with the possibility of becoming social outcasts and thus dying and West African culture was demeaning to women, as men essentially bought multiple wives to increase their social status. And then they have the nerve to go on and call the king’s forces of Europe evil men who did nothing but “murdering, gambling, drinking, whoring, blaspheming, willfully killing husbands and fathers, persecuting peasants…, stripping fields, and demanding tribute.” They go on to say that it’s just great that young children in the Native American culture are trained to endure and INFLICT physical pain on others to defend their kin in war. Yeah, how wonderful. What a beautiful display of culture. Little kids being told to hurt other little kids so they can torture and kill and be tortured and killed during war. Yep. In the movie 8 words of Hermione Granger, “That’s barbaric!”

But in any case, I’ve realized that listening to music while working helps me get past my discrepancies with the text and focus on note-taking. So since I’ve discovered that I love Hank Green’s music, I thought, “Why not try out wrock?” The only issue here is that I have NO CLUE which wrock bands are “the best” and then which songs are the most awesome. People have suggested everything from Harry and the Potters to Oliver something and the Remembralls to Draco and the Malfoys to someone and the Sugar Quills to The Moaning Myrtles… Basically, I need help sorting through them to find those really great songs. If any wrock listeners (and yes, I’m looking at you, Laura…) have any song suggestions, feel free to share them in the comments. 🙂

Thanks, and DFTBA!

I am extremely bored right now, so I’m obviously doing this to kill time.

My sister has been playing soccer with her friend for the last hour and fifteen minutes. Now, I know that is nothing, when it comes to going to watch people at soccer… That is if you like the sport. If you do, then I suppose you could spend inordinate amounts of time watching people run after a ball, and kick it all the way up and down the field, whilst trying to steal it from the opposing team and score a few goals of the opposing team’s goal thing. I, however, am not one of those people. I’m also not the kind of person to sit in the sun, while pretending to have any idea of what is going on in the field. For this reason, I have spent the last hour watching the last bit of the Hunger Games movie, reading J.D. Salinger’s Franny and Zooey, and Conan Doyle’s The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes for the fifth time, and going through Arthur Darvill’s Instagram (because even if you’re not a Whovian *gasp*, you are sort of forced to admit that he is adorable, as my sister puts it.), and wondering if the Library might have any Avenger, or Wonder Woman, or Doctor Who comic books that might make time go by faster. As far as I can tell, there are a lot of Star Wars graphic novels, and stuff like World of Warcraft , but nothing that’s incredibly interesting. There’s also a lot of Manga and Anime stuff, but I’ve never really been into that kind of stuff, for some reason.

I’m currently getting odd looks for wearing boots in the summer. To top it off, I’m also wearing sparkly laces, because I couldn’t find the regular ones. *Spoiler Alert: I found them INSIDE ANOTHER pair of boots that do not require laces.*

20120830-132339.jpg

I’ve had those laces for years, and wore them with my converse hi-tops, until my mom decided they looked ‘tacky’, which to be completely frank, is how she would describe my clothes a good 40% of the time. Why? I haven’t got the faintest idea. Nevertheless, they look cool. (I wear sparkly laces. Sparkly laces are cool.)

I will continue to try to fight this losing battle against boredom. Maybe the current Minister of Magic (M.O.M!) could dispatch a couple of Dementors to perform The Kiss right now. Or, better yet, Hagrid. Could send me either a Unicorn or an owl to entertain me. Or perhaps George could send me a couple of Pigmy Puffskeins to amuse me. And make my dog jealous.

On The Possibility of Moving, and it’s Effect on Increasing World-Suck

Over the summer, my parents started looking at houses where we might move, sometime in the near future. They’ve been looking all over the place, hoping to find a place that’s within their budget, as well as big enough for us, and close enough to my sister’s current school. It’s taken them a while, but it seems we finally found one.

Thing is, it’s in a different town.

In and of itself, this really isn’t a big deal.

Except for the fact that I’m going to have to transfer schools in what is considered the most awkward stage of life.

Especially for us Wallflowers.

And it really wouldn’t be terribly bad if we had a set date for moving, and stuff like that, but we don’t. This means I’m going to spend the next few(/several) months possibly being a nervous wreck, not wanting to suddenly leave my current school, and my friends, and Fest. God knows that’s going to be hard. It took me about five months (FIVE MONTHS!!!!) to go twenty feet down the hall, and eat lunch with Elizabeth and Maddy! And Elizabeth had to drag me (quite literally!) down the hall to what became my favorite spot in the whole school building.

Every friend I’ve made since fifth grade, I met out of pure luck.

I met Ellen and Celine through my cousin, who had been going to school with them since forever. When I moved away, we became closer than we were in school. We’d spend inordinate amounts of time chatting through GMail. We had “Weird Dreams” chain-mails, and Middle School Girl Stuff Chain Mails. I discovered Seally was a die-hard Bones fan, as well as a B&B shipper. Ellen introduced me to HarryPotter fanfiction, and Dramione and Artemis Fowl and she was the only other person who would discuss Percy Jackson with me. (I still am a big Percabeth shipper!). In seventh grade, at my sister’s current school, I met my friend Holly. To date, I don’t think I’ve met a sweeter person, or made friends with someone who doesn’t like many of the same things I do (aka: books), although we did share a love for Tina Fey, Amy Poehler,SNL and Parks and Rec.

I met Elizabeth on the first day of school last year, after having been mistakenly placed into a Ceramics class I wasn’t really interested in at the beginning . We started talking about whatever it s two strangers talk about whilst surrounded by upperclassmen who know each other. Eventually, we started talking about Harry Potter. In a school of a gazillion people (actually, 1700…) I had found somebody who loved Harry (my future husband at the time) as much, if not more than I did. I had only ever listened to very little Wizard Rock before I met her, or heard about Leaky Con.

She introduced me to two amazing people: Maddy and the Doctor.

Maddy is easily one of the most creative people I’ve met. She’s a great potter (do not confuse with Potter), and photographer/photo-shopper, and TARDIS-maker, and computer/ tech- savvy In a way most kids my age that I know are not.

What if this time around I don’t get lucky? What if my Charlie never meets a Sam or Patrick?

What if I’m doomed to spend French class muttering to myself about its similarity to Spanish like I did all last year with Danny? What if I move before Fest comes around? That is very likely, it seems… 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱

Nothing is set in stone. And it kills me not to know. Maybe The Doctor should take care of that. Or perhaps my local Ministry of Magic could provide me with a Time-Turner. But until the TARDIS-stealing Time Lord and his Tine Lord-stealing TARDIS crash on my door step, or an owl delivers said Time Turner, I will be kept in the dark, regarding ZE FUTURRREEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

This Isn’t Hogwarts by Hank Green (DFTBA Records)

I hate this place,
I can barely keep the misery off my face
Yeah there’s one place I’d much rather be
Taking transfiguration and arithmancy
And hangig’ with my friends in the owlery
But instead I’m learning parts of speech
And tryin’ not to fall asleep
And avoiding the only girl in school who might like me

It’s so grotesque
When the guy sittin’ next to me drools all over his desk
And I almost raise my hand to complain
But then I realize that I want to be doin’ the same
So I put my head down on my desk as well
And suddenly I’m learning a spell
To make my teacher’s head swell
But then he wakes me up
And I can’t help but yell…

ENGORGIO

This isn’t Hogwarts
This is a concrete box
And the pictures on the wall are never going to talk
And the teachers don’t care the kids don’t try
And the most magical thing we have is fluorescent lights
And they don’t put you in Hufflepuff if you’re not cool
Instead they sort you in the parking lot after school
And I think if I looked into the Mirror of Erised
I’d be wearing wizard robes with gold and red

I’m not saying that I’m not proud to be a nerd
But public school ain’t no place for a wizard
Yeah public school ain’t no place for a wizard

Y’know what’s gross
When the lunch meat looks like three day old soggy toast
But as I ate it anyway I overheard
This guy I hardly know calling me a nerd
So I cast Sectumsempra inside my mind
I wish there were house elves making my food
And everything was perfectly spiced
And the only one being rude was the poltergeist

And here’s what’s true
I’d do pretty much anything to go to wizard school
I’d even call Delores Umbridge my friend
If it meant I never had to go to gym again
But I look around at all of this crap
That’s part of my life
No ghosts stalking the halls
Or hanging in the bathroom stalls
And the stairs don’t move
Cause there’s no stairs at all

This isn’t Hogwarts
This is a concrete box
And the pictures on the wall are never going to talk
And the teachers don’t care the kids don’t try
And the most magical thing we have is fluorescent lights
And they don’t put you in Hufflepuff if you’re not cool
Instead they sort you in the parking lot after school
And I think if I looked into the Mirror of Erised
I’d be wearing wizard robes with gold and red

I’m not saying that I’m not proud to be a nerd
But public school ain’t no place for a wizard
Yeah public school ain’t no place for a wizard

Long Beach Island, NJ

Towards the beginning of the month, my family and I vacationed at LBI (the place where Harry Potter first came into our lives*). This was especially great because we hadn’t been there for about 4 years, but missed it so much that we just had to go back.

[*We actually watched the film there this year. :)]

I love LBI. The sand there is fine and pale, just like the sand you would find on a sandbar. There are always a whole bunch of shells, and the water is never too warm or too cold to be uncomfortable. (Or at least not to me. Though I am a fan of the cold weather and the polar bear swim.] Also, the waves are awesome! (I body board, and guess where I learned.)

While we were there, we did a lot in addition to going to the beach, such as shopping (ugh), going to the island’s amusement park, Fantasy Island, bike riding, and climbing the Barnegat Lighthouse.

Here are some various pictures taken on my trip (idk how to do the slideshow thing like Laura did… D:):

The End of Summer (is almost here)

Just looking at your calendar you might have realised it was coming: The End of Summer.

It can’t be!

It’s only August!

When did this happen?

When did the months of doing nothing (or everyhing, if you’re that type of person…) go?

Is it true, that I won’t be able to wake up at ten a.m. and go to bed at midnight? that I won’t be able to spend the whole day watching Criminal Minds and inevitably falling in love with Matthew Grey Gubler? or watching (hideously DOBLY-ed) Bones re-runs with my Bonehead grandparents? Or yelling at BBC Entertainment (because they don’t get BBC America in South America…) for not playing Doctor Who, but instead showing endless episodes of Dragon’s Den, or The ‘F’ Word, or the mind-numbing Top Gearš? Or actually just laying on the couch like a useless lump? Are you serious?

What?

Do I really have to start getting ready for SCHOOL? Getting ready as in going to bed at not-midnight, and waking up in time to go to the gym with Mom? and then walking the dog(s) and making breakfast and, like, studying? Has the world gone mad? I’m sure it has, but there really is very little you can do asides from becoming a hermit, or getting home-schooled.  If you have no interest in either of the two previously mentioned options, you can only make the most of whatever is left of your summer vacation, which in my case is about two weeks. Here are some ideas!

•Are you a Whovian? even if you’re not, be sure to watch the Series Seven Premier: “Asylum of the Daleks” sometime on the 25²th (of August). Have a viewing party with your fellow Whovians, or try to convert your friends.

•Read! you do know The Perks of Being a Wallflower is coming out as a movie in september, right? go to your library and find it! or The Hobbit! or even stuff you know you might have to read in school at some point, like say, The Great Gatsby or To Kill a Mockingbird or Franny and Zooey! there are so many good books out there that can get you back in the swing of things, so that come September you don’t feel like a drone looking at words on pages. If you don’t like classics try any one of John Green’s books (which will ideally make you ). Or Harry Potter, or Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker “trilogy” or really anything by Libba Bray and Maureen Johnson and Kathy Reichs and ALL OF THOSE AMAZING YA AUTHORS OUT THERE!

•Learn how to cook. I’ve learned how to make lasagna and Actual-Not-From-The-Box Mac & Cheese. I also might have food-poisoned my cousin, or he might actually be lactose intolerant, and should not pursue a carreer in acting. I go for the latter.

•Go all DIY Queen/King. Ellen posted some really adorable DIY’s earlier this month, so go check them out! You can also check out Rookie Mag’s Denim Jacket DIY, or this Brain Soap DIY, or THIS STRAWBERRY JAM one!or you could learn how to make ZINES!, or CARDBOARD ROCKET SHIPS! and even Saddle Shoes and Bee Hives and Hair Bows. Rookie has so many awesome DIY ideas! just search DIY and go through eleven months’ worth of archives. Personally, I’m very tempted to make a Nerd(fighter) Denim Jacket.

•Exercise. I’m not a big fan of this one, but I do know that after two months of doing Nothing, my body needs to get used to doing Something. And paying attention to What I’m Doing. Also, all this Doing Nothing hasn’t made me any less Neville Longbottom-ish.

•Study. Not a big fan of this one either, to tell you the truth. Especially when it comes to Math. However, this year I’m determined to get, at the very least a B. Maybe then I can convince my parents to let me go to Midnight Showings at the local Movie Theater, or you  know, LEAKY CON 2013!

•Write. I’ve been doing quite a bit of that, with this blog. I’ve also tried to get back into writing fanfiction, but unfortunately I haven’t had either the time or the inspiration, as per usual during The Most Dreaded Summer Hiatus Time. As soon as Bones starts up again, on a hopefully NOT SUCKY NOTE, I should have a few pieces up. Also, looking at pictures of Benedict Cumberbatch and Jim Parsons being their adorable selves makes it impossible to write.

•Wait. Wait for your school  schedule (try saying that with a posh British accent!) to come out! wait for your favourite re-runs of Gilmore Girls or Star Trek  to come on. This is why my sister and I live glued to the iPad. WE CAN WATCH ONE SHOW ON THE TELLY AND THE OTHER ONE ON THE IPAD AND ANOTHER ONE ON THE LAPTOPS.

•Have Fun. You can do that by doing pretty much everything on this list.

Have any other ideas? LET ME KNOW!!!!

Also, READ THIS! I read it over fifteen times, at different points of my freshman year, when I was feeling very teen-ager-y, and moody and weird.

šI don’t know very much about cars, except how to drive them. I’d be perfectly happy with a tiny, adorable car, without having to know how many horses it has, and how balanced, or whatever it is. BTW, If I had a Bug, I would get it eyelashes.

Really Adorable DIY Projects!

Do-It-Yourself projects are always fun, especially when the outcome is something really awesome and useful.

This first project is inspired by Luna Lovegood from the Harry Potter series, a slightly eccentric Ravenclaw who befriends Harry, Ron, and Hermione. All you need is earring hooks, different colored seed beads, and beading thread.

Luna Lovegood Beaded Radish Earings

Pattern for Beaded Radish Earings

Found at http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/luna-lovegood-beaded-radish-earrings.

This next project is quite simple, as well as being amazingly useful. I really don’t use actual bookmarks, and so being able to make them last second out of paperclips is really great.

Paperclip Heart Bookmarks

If you want more variation or just aren’t all that fond of hearts, you can also just tie/glue/otherwise attach bows and things to the tops of your paperclips!

Paperclip Bookmarks With Bows

And of course, there are always friendship bracelets… I’ve made about fifteen of them so far this year; I usually use embroidery thread, but you can really use whatever you have on hand (“on hand”, get it?? :P). There are hundreds of different ways you can braid, knot, weave, and wrap thread to make these bracelets – the best way to find out how is probably to either search the internet or to check a book out of the library.

Friendship Bracelets

This last project requires a bit more time and also the use of power tools. In order to make this necklace or bracelet, you will need to use a saw or other tool to cut your colored pencils into same-sized pieces – I would say about one centimeter each. Then, you will need to drill holes through all of the pieces (through the wood part, not the pencil!). Finally, string them together, alternating the directions they face.

Colored Pencil Bracelet or Necklace

I hope you guys like these DIY projects! 🙂 Have fun!

On the Ethics of Shipping (Harry Potter)

Happy Birthday, Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling!! Today is Harry Potter’s 32nd Birthday and J.K. Rowling’s 47th!!!

And yesterday was Professor Neville Longbottom’s 32nd Birthday, so Happy [Belated] Birthday to him, as well!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Shipping in the Harry Potter fandom to me seems to be just amazingly complicated. For instance: Sure, I ship Severus/Lily but would cry for WEEKS if Harry Potter ceased to exist! Wouldn’t anybody? And also: How are you supposed to ship Dramione if this means Scorpius would not be born? (And: Is partial shipping even possible? Like, by definition, can I ship Remus/Sirius SOMETIMES instead of ALL THE TIME?? Because I love Tonks, I really do…) But I seem to always be able to find a way around this; my real shipping ethics don’t come into play until Harry Potter himself comes up.

In general, I consider myself a Fairly Strong Shipper of Harry/Ginny. I mean, it’s near impossible to imagine them not together; it would be simply Not Right. However, I absolutely despise most Harry/Ginny fanfiction. I mean, I would rather read Hermione/Ron fanfiction than Harry/Ginny, and I HATE Ron. ESPECIALLY with Hermione.*

[*This goes back to me hating Ron’s personality, I think. He’s really mean and obnoxious and insensitive and just plain immature for most of the time. Specifically towards Hermione. And I know what you’re saying, that young boys express their feelings for girls by making fun of them, but you know what? I could make that same argument for Draco, who is less mean and obnoxious and insensitive and immature towards Hermione and instead just likes picking on her. So if that was true, wouldn’t it be Draco who liked Hermione? Exactly.]

The main reason I dislike most Harry/Ginny fanfiction is probably because Ginny is a very hard character to write. I would know. I’ve tried. Her personality is less simple and defined than Harry’s, always the Determined Hero, or Hermione’s, the Bookworm, or even Voldemort’s, the Heartless Bad Guy. Instead, she’s something of a mix between several archetypes. She’s a bit of a Tomboy, but she’s also Independent and a Fiercely Loyal Friend. She is Sporty and has had LOADS of Boyfriends. So all in all, she’s pretty confusing. This makes it exceptionally hard for people who are not J.K. Rowling to write her completely In Character; the only really great Ginnys I have read are written by Dramione authors, who mostly focus on the Fiercely Loyal Friend part of her character.

That being said, I much prefer to read Harry/Hermione fanfiction, although I do not ship Harmony in canon AT ALL. I have no idea why this is. I guess I might like the fluffiness that is usually present in these stories? This shipping is certainly much different from my OTPs (TTPs?), Draco/Hermione and Artemis/Holly, as the fics are pretty much Pure Fluff without any Sarcastic Humor and Sharp Wit. And so in that way, it may be me Looking For Something Different. But it also might be just because it’s so interesting to think about how Harry and Hermione’s friendship could have, under different circumstances, developed into Something More. So I really have no clue about the reasons behind my unorthodox attraction to Harry/Hermione fanfiction. But I do know that reading it is far more enjoyable than reading Harry/Ginny fanfiction.

Happy birthday again to Harry, J.K. Rowling, and Neville!!

Happy Birthday, J.K. Rowling!

The Stories we love best do live in us forever. So if you come back by film or by page, Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home.

-J.K. Rowling at the HP&HBP Part II London Premier

Forty-seven years ago, a genius was born in Gloucestershire, England. Her name was Joann Rowling, and she would grow up to be one of the most inspiring, fantastic, and  imaginative writers to date. As a girl, Joanne constantly wrote stories, primarily for her younger sister Dianne’s enjoyment. She studied at Exeter University, where she earned a French and Classics degree. Later, as a post-grad, she moved to London where eventually she would start writing what would become her Great Masterpiece: The Harry Potter saga.

In the early ’90’s Jo moved to Portugal to teach English as a Second Language. In 1992, she got married, and a year later she gave birth to her daughter, Jessica.  Shortly thereafter, her marriage ended, and she, along with Jessica, moved to Edinburgh, Scotland. It was there, that the first volume of the Harry Potter series was eventually completed. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was first published in June 1997 (US: September ’98), under the now-famous (and slightly pointlessš) pseudonym: J.K. Rowling.

It is worth noting,  that despite rumours that Rowling completed the Philosopher’s Stone in cafes because she was unable to rent a flat with heating, she herself has stated (repeatedly) that although she did have heat in her flat (Edinburgh during the winter…) she liked writing in cafes, because going for walks was the only way Baby Jessica would fall asleep. Also, she didn’t use napkins for writing, she used actual paper.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was published the next year, in July 1998. It stayed on the UK ADULT BESTSELLER LISTS for over  a month after its publication. When it was published in the US, on 2nd June, 1999, it sold incredibly well.  When The Prisoner of Azkaban came out on July (and September in the US) of 1999, the Boy Wizard as well as Rowling herself were garnering world-wide acclaim and press attention. Meanwhile, The Philosopher’s Stone topped bestseller’s charts in the UK, and all three Potter books occupied the Top Three spots in several US Bestseller’s Lists.

The Fourth Book: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was published in the UK, the US and Australia on August 8th, 2000. It reached a record 1 million copies printed in the UK, and about 3.8 million copies printed in the US.  The Goblet of Fire also set records with the sale figures within the first week of publication.

It was three years before she would release the fifth book: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. It became the fastest-selling book in history², as well as the longest in the series, with a page-count of 766 pages. In my personal opinion, this is also the saddest and darkest book in the series.  In July 2005, Rowling’s sixth book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was released. It set record-breaking sales. It also gave us Ronmione shippers hope, while breaking our Harmony shipper’s spirit. It unleashed a very confusing period that still isn’t over. For the most part. Actually I’m pretty okay with how things ended up. Anyways, moving on…

The last and Most Awaited Book Ever (okay, probably not EVER…): Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows came out  was published in the UK, USA and other English-speaking countries on 21st July 2007. The book is the fastest selling book in the UK and USA, with 8.3 million selling in the first 24 hours and 11.5 million in the first ten days. THOSE, in case you were wondering for some reason, are INCREDIBLE FIGURES. They are MIND-BLOWING.

Thanks to J.K. Rowling millions of kids that never read (like, ever!) actually started reading… a lot! Thanks to this woman’s never-ending creativity millions of people have been able to get into this ongoing journey/experience of pure unadulterated Amazing-ness. Her works have allowed us to connect with people around us; I’ve made friends based on our mutual LOVE for J.K. Rowling and Harry Potter and Hogwarts and LITERALLY EVERYTHING (including weird ships…), After my mom, my dad, and my sister read the books we were able to discuss them in-depth and get to understand how we each feel about different things, and how we react to certain things. We even got to emotionally bond over stuff like ships. LAST TIME I CHECKED MY MOM WAS A DIE-HARD HARMONY SHIPPER.

So, I just want to take a little time (and space) to thank Her Majesty The Queen of Pure Awesome J.K. Rowling for creating this universe that has literally been like a home to so many of us.

♥♥Thanks, Jo! Happy Birthday!!!♥♥

šThe main point of having a pseudonym is to remain anonymous. In this case, Jo’s publishers believed she would have a greater male audience if she didn’t reveal her gender.  Geesh. LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!

²Apparently the current Fastest Selling Paperback is Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James. Twilight Porn. (Did I mention I hate Twilight?)♦
