Imaginary Interviews: Zooey Deschanel

ZooeyEditFor the past month and a half, I’ve been having dreams of myself sitting across different people who I admire for different reasons, and interviewing them. Among them are Zooey Deschanel, Kathy Reichs, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Tavi Gevinson, Joss Whedon, Martin Freeman, and many others. Now, the chances of that actually happening are very slim, but since I have no life, I decided I’d indulge in my fantasies, and come up with questions I’d ask any ways.

So here it goes! These are some of the things I’d ask actress, singer/song-writer and HelloGiggles co-founder, Zooey Deschanel:

1. You played Trillian Astra/Tricia McMillan in the film adaptation of Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the    Galaxy…

    • Had you previously read any of the books? or watched the TV series?
    • If so, who was your favorite character (other than Trillian)?
    • Did you ever find the story hard to follow?
    • How much fun was it to be held prisioner by the Vogons? particularly when they were holding you over the beast thing before Arthur and Ford came to your rescue? It looked like tons of fun from my living room…
    • How do you feel about Space/Time Travel?
    • When would you travel to?
    • Have you seen Martin Freeman (Arthur Dent) on Sherlock?

2. You’re in a band, She & Him, with Matt Ward…

    • What’s your favorite song that you’ve done with him? I love “Why do you let me Stay Here”, “Thieves”, “Gonna Get Along Without You Now”, and your cover of Holly Buddy’s  “Oh Boy” is great!
    • You’ve also provided vocals for Matt’s solo albums Hold Time in “Rave On” (another Buddy Holly cover!) and “Never Had Nobody Like You”, as well as in A Wasteland Companion in “Sweetheart”, which is wonderful. I forgot where I was going with this. You’re a great singer!
    • Which one out of She & Him’s four albums (I’m counting the Christmas album, because I ADORE IT) would you say is your favorite?

3. Before starring in New Girl, which is so much fun to watch, you starred in Syfy’s Tin Man, a miniseries where you played Dorothy’s grand-daughter and had to go save Oz from your older sister Azkadellia, who had been possessed by the Witch…

    • How awesome was it to play someone related to Dorothy, who was played by JUDY GARLAND?
    • How awesome was Judy Garland? she was such a magical singer!
    • Which character, other than DG would you have liked to play? If the Tin Man, Raw, Glitch, etc. didn’t have to necessarily be played by a guy, that is. Although Alan Cumming was awesome as Glitch.

4. You started HelloGiggles.com with your friends Sophia Rossi and Molly McAleer…

    • Originally, it was supposed to be kind of like a lady-friendly version of Funny or Die, but now it’s more of a blog/web-zine. How soon after the site launched did you realize it wasn’t going to be exactly what you guys envisioned it to be?
    • You’ve been very vocal about people hating on you for not being feminist enough for wearing peter pan collars, or wearing tiaras or whatever it is people seem to find wrong with you. You’ve said that the
    • What’s some of your favorite stuff  that you’ve seen on the site?

5. You contributed to a piece in Tavi Gevinson’s RookieMag.com, called “Higher Learning”, where you (and other really awesome people) talked about your high school experiences…

    • You described yourself as “the unicorniest” unicorn. Is that still true? If not, when do you thing you grew out of it? (I’m asking because I too, feel like a super-unicorn-y unicorn in a sea of unicorns most of the time…)
    • Do you still think a lot about eternity?
    • How do you feel about dudes with floppy hair?

6.  You usually have really great nail-art, and I understand the attraction behind it. I mean, tuxedo nails? Beatles nails? that’s genius!

    • How do you decide what to do on your nails? (it usually takes me ages to decide on stuff! one time it took me a half hour to decide to do the Starfleet Insignia. JUST THE INSIGNIA, nothing big!)

7. Have you watched Twin Peaks? if so…

    • Who was your favorite character?
    • Did you like it (I still haven’t finished… i’m still very early in the series!)?
    • Your mom was Donna Hayward’s mom!

8. How do you feel about baby animals?

9. Who’s your…

    • Favorite singer person?
    • Favorite fictional character?
    • Favorite author?

10. What would you say is your favorite…

    • color?
    • Movie?
    • TV Show?
    • Album?
    • song?
    • dessert?
    • food?
    • book?
    • invention/infomercial thing?
    • season?

11. Would you host SNL again?

    • Which of the sketches you did when you hosted (in 2012) was your favorite?
    • What’s your favorite sketch in the show?

12. How do you feel about Nick and Jess?

13. And Schmidt and Cece?

14. Your bangs have become something of a Thing, that’s automatically linked to you, kind of like Downton Abbey’s Lady Mary’s Eyebrows, I suppose…

    • How do you get them looking so brilliant? They’re always so perfect!

on Ben Gibbard’s Former Lives LP

I’m probably not the only person that has developed mixed feelings over Ben Gibbard’s first solo album Former Lives. Don’t get me wrong–I think the album is worth every penny, and also worth the (in my case emotional) wait¹.  But there’s something a little off about it. I mean, obviously it isn’t like anything Death Cab has ever done, though he’s the one that writes the songs. If he’d wanted it to be like Death Cab’s stuff, he wouldn’t have gone solo, right? But some of the songs don’t quite feel Gibbard-y. Not like The Postal Service’s stuff, or like Death Cab’s stuff, which has always felt intensely personal, even when they weren’t meant to. I mean, listening to Something About Airplanes is so laden with… college-boy angst. It reminds me of John Green’s first novel, Looking For Alaska. And “Title and Registration” on Transatlanticism is just… so poignant and relate-able even if its not a cop that pulls you over asking for the some legal documents, only to unleash a barrage of memories of a former lover who deserted you. It’s always reminded me of people I’m not friends with anymore. And like all the stuff you amass during that time that you’re friends with them that means something to you. I always ask myself what the heck do I do with this? throw it out? I never do. Comparatively, none of the songs on Former Lives really inspire any zeal. None of them really make you want to cry your eyes out, or laugh your troubles away (yes, laughing is very cathartic. Especially when Monday Morningis on. It is simply beautiful).

However, there are some GREAT songs, such as “Lady Adelaide”, which reminds me of DCFC’s “What Sarah Said” on Plans, although the melody is a lot happier; the story runs along the same lines. “Lily” is also quite good, despite the fact that it’s not “Monday Morning”, meaning it is not about Zooey Deschanel, which saddens me a lot².  My Second Absolute Favourite, “I’m Building a Fire”, is also Wonderful. It is slightly reminiscent of “I Will Follow You Into the Dark”, although much happier-sounding. My absolute favourite, “Teardrop Windows” is actually one of his best songs EVER. I mean, it is so pleasant to listen to! and the music video is just charming!

I can only conclude that he was definitely going for a different vibe. I did read that this LP wasn’t meant to be quite so biographical, despite the fact that a) it was a SOLO album, b) and it covered “eight years, three relationships, living in two different places, drinking then not drinking”.

I’m pretty happy with it, overall. It’s a very pleasant addition to my music library (30% of which is made up of DCFC! because I haven’t got all their albums/EPs). I’m so happy for him!

If you want a more professional/less amateurish review, check this one out, by Ian Cohen on Pitchfork, and this one on Rolling Stone, and this one on  the LA Times.

¹Admittedly, I had to wait just over a month to get it. And the fact that Sandy  interfered with my two-month-long campaign for my parents to take me to Ben’s show in New York just made it worse. But, take my word for it, it is great.

²UGH. WHY DO I HAVE TO CARE SO MUCH ABOUT THIS?

I’m obsessed with Christmas Music: Why am I listening to Christmas music in August?

Sorry, dear readers for the awful delay in between posts… We were out-of-town visiting the picturesque town of Villa de Leyva (Boyaca), Colombia. We rode horses and quads through the pine-filled desert, and fed ostriches out of the palms of our hands. Also, we got Wool Boots That Make You Feel Like You’re Walking in Clouds.

Anyways, I just recently noticed I’ve been humming Christmas music to myself a lot. It’s not just stuff like “Jingle Bells” and “Deck the Halls”, either. It’s stuff you’d find on The Ratpack’s Christmas Album, and She & Him and even Judy Garland. Admittedly this isn’t strange behaviour when it comes to me, but given that it IS AUGUST I’m a little bit worried. Afterall, it is NOT normal to sing “The Christmas Waltz” while trying to fall asleep.

Maybe I’m just really looking forward to the Doctor Who  Christmas Special and am hoping that time will fly faster if I sing this music?

Maybe I’m actually an Elf that got mistakenly sent to Human Land?

Whatever the reason, below I’ll share with you some of my favorite Christmas Songs.

“Baby It’s Cold Outside”

Alright, so this isn’t strictly a Christmas song, but it is perfect for the Winter. Of all of the recordings made of this song over the years, I’ve got to admit my favourites are the Zooey Deschanel and Leon Redbone version for Elf, as well as the She & Him A very She & Him Christmas version, and of course Lady Antebellum’s.

also, Dean Martin is absolutely soothing in his version:

“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”

This is a very heart-warming and charming song. Whether it’s sung by Judy Garland in Meet Me in St. Louis or by Frank Sinatra on Christmas with the Rat Pack or by M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel on A Very She & Him Christmas. Simply Delightful. Another thing that I think sets this song apart from others, is it’s soothing-ness. Check it out!

“Blue Christmas”

Although  the Beach Boys  released  this song as a single on their Christmas Album the same day Elvis Presley released it as a single in 1964, it was Elvis’ version that drove people wild. It might have been the fact that Martina McBride sang it with him…

“White Christmas”

I think this is the reason I’m always hoping for at least a foot of snow on Christmas, despite my deep aversion to snow. The funny thing is, eventhough I always say I want it to be snowy on Christmas, I end up cursing the darned thing on our way to my Aunt’s house for Christmas Dinner, and then all the way back home. Bing Crosby’s is the best recording of this song… EVARRR!!

“Sleigh Ride”

Harry Connick Jr. is simply glorious in his rendering of this song. I might even like riding in a sleigh through THE SNOW if I could find a young fellow to sing this during the ride.

“Silver Bells”

Oh, my! I don’t know whose recording is my favourite! Bing Crosby! Harry Connick Jr!  She & Him! The Rat Pack!  They’re just too grand!

t

I’m sure I’m missing  few, but those are all the ones I can think of off of the top of my head(9)¾ without looking at my favourites on Pandora (which would be impossible anyways, since it can’t be accessed from Colombia…). I thank you for playing along with my insanity.

Do you have any holiday favourites? Let me know below!♦

Breaking the Shipping Rules: Shipping IRL

As I’m sure many of you know, Shipping many times extends to more than just The Fandom. Shipping, although highly UNADVISABLE, sometimes extends to Real Life. This is not good.  I try to abstain from doing it, as much as I can, but it’s hard, especially when deep-down you’re convinced that THEY BELONG TOGEZZERRR! Some Highly Popular examples are ‘Brangelina’ and the recently divorced TomxKatie and, well, you get the point. Then there are ‘Demily’ (Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz….) and ‘Darvillian’ (Arthur Darvill and Karen Gillan), and ‘Smillan’ (Matt Smith and Karen Gillan) and one of my favourites: ZooeyxBen (Zooey Deschanel and  Ben Gibbard).

I am really big fan of both Zooey Deschanel and Ben Gibbard, and I ship(ped) them SO HARD. When news of their split and following divorce hit the news, I became slightly depressed. (It is very embarrassing to admit this, because I always mock people who care too much about The Housewives and The Jersey Shore people…).WHY DID THEY BREAK UP? THEY WERE SOO BEAUTIFUL! That video (in which you can’t see anything) of them performing together at The Crocodile Cafe (where Ben and his DCFC band-mates had their first ACTUAL performance all the way in 1998…) is so PERRFECT!! They were  my RL OTP! They were my Music Biz Power Couple! I became convinced that DCFC’s “Monday Morning” was a Zooey Song. I stopped listening to Death Cab  for a long time (three months!) and listened to She & Him obsessively, or at least more often (if possible) than before.

Eventually, I got over it.

Or so I thought.

Now there’s pictures of Zooey going out with some (really good-looking) guy. AND IT’S NOT BEN. It’s like re-living Bones‘ Sixth Season all over again. You know, when you ship Booth and Brennan, but because you want your OTP to be happy, you grudgingly ship Booth and Hannah, or Brennan and Sully or Booth and Cam, or Angela and Wendell instead of HODGELA. It’s like shipping Xander and Buffy, instead of Buffy and Angel.

GOSH.

Bottom line, it’s better to keep shipping Fictional Characters (MycroftxCake, for example…), and let People’s lives take their course.

And I’m still wildly confused by Demily shippers… after all Emily has a Husby (also called David!) and an adorable baby boy that is the reason the past season was the way it was. Also, David has two beautiful children and a wife.

As my friend’s awesome Button says: “If it’s a Thing, I SHIP IT!”♦
